Aretha Franklin to be honored with tribute, street naming

Detroit — The Queen of Soul is now king of the road.

Surrounded by fans, the legendary singer had a city street named after her Thursday evening. A section of Madison, between Brush and Witherell, is now known as Aretha Franklin Way.

Next time you're in Detroit's theater district, you can take a spin down Aretha Franklin Way.

The Queen of Soul wiped away tears Thursday evening as street signage in her honor was unveiled to a crowd of cheering fans on Madison.

Ahead of the free Detroit Music Weekend headlined by Aretha Franklin, the city of Detroit honored the Queen of Soul by renaming a street in her honor. Aretha Franklin Way will now run along Madison Ave. at Brush Street.

Detroit Music Weekend is giving you the chance to see The Queen of Soul for free this Saturday.

Thursday’s public street naming for the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, kicks off the inaugural Detroit Music Weekend, a four-day event that will showcase Detroit, its artists and its burgeoning entertainment district.

Detroit and music have a symbiotic relationship. Our fine city has been shaped by our musical history, just as the people of the city have influenced music. One of Detroit’s nicknames is Motown after all.

Detroit Music Weekend is a new festival that will take over the city's theater district along Madison Street from Thursday through Sunday.

There's always something meaningful for Aretha Franklin about a hometown performance.

But with retirement possibly looming, there's something especially significant about June 10, when she'll hit an outdoor stage in the city's theater district to headline the inaugural Detroit Music Weekend festival.

It’s a golden anniversary for a gold single — and half a century of R-E-S-P-E-C-T for the Queen of Soul.

Detroit Music Weekend takes place June 10-11 in Detroit's Theatre District.

Aretha Franklin will perform for free on June 10 as part of Detroit Music Weekend, a four-day concert unfolding in Detroit’s entertainment district June 8-11.

What just may be her last live performance in her beloved hometown, Aretha Franklin will headline a free outdoor concert which includes some of the most popular Detroit bred musical acts from R&B to Rock, to Hip Hop, to Techno and even Country and Gospel.

The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, is to be honoured in her hometown of Detroit at the upcoming and first instalment of the Detroit Music Weekend.

The festival also will feature a handful of ticketed events, going on sale in April, including shows from retro-soul artist Mayer Hawthorne, hip-hop DJ D-Nice and the 2017 R&B Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
